Apple Maps Expands Cycling Directions to Hong Kong and Taiwan

Apple has expanded its cycling directions feature on Apple Maps to include Hong Kong and Taiwan. This addition marks a significant step in Apple’s ongoing efforts to enhance navigation options for cyclists around the world. Initially launched in 2020 in select cities like New York and Beijing, the cycling directions have since seen gradual coverage growth in various regions.

The cycling directions feature provides essential information for users planning their routes. Cyclists can now access data on bike paths, bike lanes, and elevation changes along their journeys. The routes are designed specifically for cycling, prioritizing bike-friendly paths and avoiding busy roads and steep hills. This tailored approach distinguishes cycling directions from standard walking or driving navigation, ensuring a safer and more efficient riding experience.

Global Expansion of Cycling Directions

Since the initial rollout, Apple has extended its cycling directions to numerous bike-friendly countries and regions, including the Netherlands. The current offering in Hong Kong and Taiwan exemplifies Apple’s commitment to making urban cycling more accessible and enjoyable.

Interestingly, while cycling directions are now available in these two regions, they have not yet been included in Apple’s official list of supported areas on its website. As it stands, the list includes several countries such as Australia, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom, among others.

As Apple continues to develop its mapping services, it remains to be seen whether more regions will receive cycling direction capabilities in the near future. Users are encouraged to share their experiences with cycling directions on Apple Maps, as feedback could influence further enhancements.

For those looking to optimize their cycling experience, this expansion is a welcome development. Access to accurate cycling directions can significantly improve the overall riding experience, contributing to a healthier and more environmentally friendly mode of transportation.

In addition to the cycling feature, Apple is also promoting its range of wearable devices, including various models of the Apple Watch, which can enhance fitness tracking and outdoor navigation for cyclists. With prices starting at $169 for the 40mm Apple Watch SE 2, it offers a budget-friendly option for those looking to integrate technology into their cycling routines.

As more regions gain access to these features, Apple Maps is poised to become an increasingly valuable resource for cyclists around the globe.
