Victorians will enjoy free access to the state’s public transport system every weekend this summer. Starting with the launch of the Metro Tunnel in early December, all passengers can travel on buses, trams, and trains without charge every Saturday and Sunday until February 1.
The initiative, announced by the state government, aims to encourage the use of public transport while celebrating the opening of the new Metro Tunnel. Travelers can board any tram, bus, or train in Melbourne and regional areas from the first service on Saturdays to the last service on Sundays throughout the designated period.
During the Summer Start phase, which begins with the Metro Tunnel’s opening, transport gates will be open without the need for a valid ticket or Myki card. Passengers are not required to tap on or off, and if they inadvertently do so, they will not incur any charges. Some regional services will still necessitate a reservation at no cost, consistent with existing regulations.
Ms. Allan, the state’s Minister for Transport, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “We’re saying thank you Victoria – with free PT every weekend this summer.” She highlighted that this program represents “the biggest free transport bonanza in Victoria’s history,” reinforcing the government’s commitment to making public transport accessible to everyone.
This move is expected to have a substantial impact on local communities, promoting greater use of public transport and reducing congestion on roadways during the busy summer season.
As the new timetable takes effect on February 1, this free travel period offers residents and visitors a perfect opportunity to explore Victoria without the burden of transport costs. With the goal of fostering a more connected and sustainable community, the government hopes that this initiative will pave the way for long-lasting changes in travel habits.
In conclusion, from early December until February 1, public transport in Victoria will be entirely free every weekend, allowing everyone to travel conveniently and without charge. This initiative not only aims to promote public transport usage but also enhances the overall travel experience for all residents and visitors in the state.
