Australia Urged to Reserve Gas, Cut Prices Amid Supply Crisis

URGENT UPDATE: Australia is facing a critical gas supply challenge, with the Australian Workers Union calling for immediate government action to reserve natural gas for domestic use and impose price controls. The government is anticipated to announce a significant east coast gas reserve policy in the coming weeks, which aims to curb gas exports and ensure adequate supply for the eastern states.

The union’s national secretary, Paul Farrow, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “To shore up Australian industry for the 21st century, we need affordable gas reserved for domestic use right now – not years down the track.” This call comes as experts warn of potential gas shortfalls in the near future, highlighting the need for immediate action.

Reports suggest that one proposal under consideration involves the federal government purchasing gas in bulk to provide to manufacturers at discounted rates. This unexpected approach has taken gas industry sources by surprise, indicating the government’s willingness to explore new strategies to address the crisis.

While the Labor Government focuses on increasing gas supply, Farrow cautioned that ensuring fair pricing must also be a priority. “Yes, a gas reservation scheme is the central plank of any solution. But if the price of Australian gas to Australians doesn’t come down and stay down, then it doesn’t count,” he asserted.

Western Australia has successfully implemented a gas reservation policy since 2006, requiring LNG producers to allocate 15 percent of their gas for local use. This strategy has resulted in gas prices rising at a significantly slower rate than those on the east coast, providing a potential model for the national approach.

The federal opposition, led by Sussan Ley, has also backed similar measures, proposing financial penalties to ensure more fuel remains onshore. Ley stated, “We need more gas in the system. We stand on some of the biggest reserves of natural gas in the world,” reinforcing the urgency for the government to expedite new LNG project approvals.

As the situation develops, all eyes are on the Labor Government’s upcoming announcement regarding the gas reserve policy. The implications of this decision will be crucial for both consumers and industries reliant on stable gas prices.

Stay tuned as we continue to monitor this evolving situation and its impact on the Australian economy and energy sector.
