Brimbank Council Urges Urgent Funding to Combat Homelessness

URGENT UPDATE: The Brimbank Council has just announced a critical call for increased funding to tackle homelessness in the municipality. At their August 2023 meeting, council leaders endorsed a statement highlighting significant service gaps that urgently need addressing to combat this escalating crisis.

Mayor Thuy Dang emphasized the dire situation, stating, “Local councils play an essential role in linking people to the support services they require. However, it’s important to note that local government does not have a formal role in the homelessness service system; this responsibility lies with the state and federal governments.”

The council is demanding immediate action to fill three primary gaps: funding for a dedicated homelessness service specific to Brimbank, enhanced specialist outreach for alcohol and other drugs (AOD), and a coordinated local model integrating housing, health, and mental health services.

This plea comes as authorities report a sharp rise in homelessness, making it imperative for state and federal governments to respond. Mayor Dang urged, “We will persist in our call for immediate action on homelessness and strive to improve community health.” She highlighted that vulnerable individuals need access to housing and health services to prevent further deterioration of their situations.

In response, a state government spokesperson stated that over $300 million is invested annually in homelessness support services, with $21.6 million allocated specifically to the Brimbank Melton area. This funding supports essential services like homelessness entry points in Sunshine and Melton, dedicated youth services, and individual case support.

The spokesperson added, “We know that homelessness is a housing problem, which is why we are investing more than $6.3 billion through the Big Housing Build and Regional Housing Fund to deliver over 13,300 social and affordable homes across Victoria.”

Meanwhile, the federal government confirmed its commitment to tackling homelessness through various national initiatives, including the National Agreement on Social Housing and Homelessness and the Reconnect Program. They stressed the importance of collaboration with local services to address these critical issues effectively.

The situation remains fluid, and community members are urged to stay tuned for developments. As the council continues to push for funding and resources, the urgency for action has never been more pronounced.

Authorities are calling on local residents to support these initiatives and advocate for essential services that can change lives. The impact of effective homelessness services can be profound, providing not just shelter, but also hope and stability for those in need.

Stay connected for more updates on this pressing issue as Brimbank Council works tirelessly to bridge the gaps in homelessness support.
