Busselton Launches Urgent Community Pantry and Veggie Garden

URGENT UPDATE: A new initiative in Busselton is now operational, providing vital support to combat food insecurity. The Really Really Free Pantry and Community Veggie Garden, launched by Lamp Inc, opened its doors today at 224 Bussell Highway.

This innovative project allows locals to access fresh food without any questions asked, directly addressing the pressing issue of food insecurity in the area. Lee Hill, a housing and homelessness advocate with Lamp Inc, stated that the initiative arose from direct conversations with community members facing hardship. “Food insecurity came up again and again as a key issue in our community,” she said.

Inspired by a similar project in Bunbury, the Busselton team quickly mobilized support. “We decided to replicate it,” Hill explained. The pantry, generously donated by the Lions Shed, will be restocked every two weeks by Coles Vasse, operating on a straightforward “take what you need, when you need it” philosophy.

Just in time for the holiday season, the Community Veggie Garden was also completed, offering free access to fresh, seasonal produce. Hill emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting the community’s struggle with obesity and the need for easy access to healthy food options. “Having access to free, fresh produce . . . it’s wonderful to help address that,” she remarked.

The garden was established entirely through local donations, including materials from Wattyl Paint, Naturaliste Landscape Supplies, and Bunnings. Both the pantry and garden are designed as judgment-free spaces, requiring no referrals or eligibility checks.

Hill expressed hopes for further improvements, specifically a wheelchair access ramp and assistance from local companies to help maintain the garden. “To access emergency relief, you have to prove eligibility through bank statements and government payments,” she noted. “The demographics of people experiencing that stress now extend far beyond those receiving government aid.”

Residents looking to support this vital community resource can donate directly at the pantry or at Coles Vasse. The Really Really Free Pantry is located at 224 Bussell Highway, with the Community Veggie Garden situated next door at 226 Bussell Highway.

This initiative is a significant step toward fostering community resilience and ensuring that every individual has access to fresh, nutritious food. Stay tuned for more updates on how this project evolves in the coming weeks.
