Parkes Dishies Claim Gold at National Masters Hockey Tournament

UPDATE: The Parkes Masters “Dishies” have made headlines by winning gold at the Hockey Australia Masters Invitational Tournament held in Goulburn this past weekend. This prestigious event, which ran from October 12 to 15, 2023, attracted the nation’s elite masters indoor hockey players and served as a critical selection platform for the 2026 Australian Masters Indoor Teams.

In a stunning display of skill and teamwork, the Dishies dominated the Over 50s category, remaining undefeated throughout the four-day competition. Their journey to the top included impressive victories: a strong 7-3 win, a decisive 5-0 triumph, a challenging 2-2 draw, and a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the round matches.

The semi-final saw them deliver a commanding 3-0 win, propelling them into the final against a formidable Victorian side. In a nail-biting showdown, the Dishies executed their strategy flawlessly, clinching the championship with a 4-2 victory and securing the gold medal.

Coach David Mike expressed immense pride in the team’s performance, stating, “Their hard work and dedication have truly shone through, and this gold medal is a testament to their consistent improvement.”

Parkes’ success extended beyond the Dishies. Local athlete Lee Hodge also showcased her talent in the Over 50s competition, helping her team win a bronze medal after a series of remarkable performances. Adding to the excitement, several Parkes players have been recognized for their exceptional skills, earning spots in the Indoor Masters World Cup set to take place in Nottingham next year.

Congratulations are in order for Lee Hodge (Over 45s – goalkeeper) and Denise Gersbach (Over 50s – midfield), who will represent Australia at this prestigious event. Furthermore, Coach David Mike has been appointed as the coach of the Australian Over 50s team, alongside Dishies teammates Lynn Everett, Narelle Richardson, and Kath Boicos, who have also been selected to join the national squad.

The Parkes Masters “Dishies” have not only brought home gold but have also set a shining example of dedication and teamwork in sports. Their achievements are a source of pride for the local community and a reminder of the potential for success at every age. Congratulations to all the Parkes players on their outstanding efforts, and stay tuned for more updates as they prepare for their upcoming international competitions!
