UPDATE: Thousands of homes across Canberra are grappling with severe water outages as main breaks disrupt supply, impacting over 22,600 properties in the past financial year. The ACT’s water and sewerage provider, Icon Water, has confirmed that the city’s average repair time for these incidents has lagged behind other major cities, leaving residents in urgent need of solutions.
In the latest figures from 2024-25, the suburb of Kambah reported the highest number of affected properties at 1,086, followed closely by Wanniassa with 875 and Gungahlin at 704. These outages have resulted in frustrating two-hour wait times for repairs, raising concerns among residents about the reliability of the water network.
Icon Water’s data shows that the average duration of unplanned water interruptions is approximately 118 minutes, placing Canberra fifth among comparable utilities. For context, similar outages last 110 minutes in Melbourne and 179 minutes in Sydney, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Icon Water cited multiple factors contributing to these main breaks, including “soil movement, pipe age, and temperature fluctuations.” They noted that 303 water main breaks were recorded in the last year, indicating an average of 8.82 breaks per 100 kilometres of the 3,400-kilometre network, making it the third lowest rate in Australia.
Residents have expressed their frustration over repeated outages, especially in suburbs such as Hughes and Braddon, which, despite their small populations, accounted for 3 percent of all water outage properties. This discrepancy highlights the uneven impact of water infrastructure failures across the territory.
Furthermore, Icon Water has reported a significant reduction in water loss due to leaks and bursts, dropping from 66 litres per service connection per day in 2023-24 to just 39 litres in the past year. This improvement reflects ongoing efforts to enhance the water delivery network amidst increasing demand.
Residents are urged to stay informed about ongoing repairs and outages through official channels. As the situation develops, local authorities are expected to implement measures aimed at improving the resilience of Canberra’s water infrastructure.
For those affected, timely updates will be critical as Icon Water continues to address the challenges of maintaining a reliable water supply in the capital.
