A scene reminiscent of New York City unfolded in Melbourne as film crews transformed Swanston Street into a bustling backdrop for the Hollywood production, Empire City. On the night of March 12, 2024, the corner of Swanston and Collins streets became a temporary version of downtown Manhattan, with filming scheduled to continue over the next few days.
Crews have set up an elaborate production, complete with a fleet of New York City taxis and a myriad of technical equipment. Collins Street has been renamed West 53rd Street for the shoot, while Little Collins Street is now designated as West 52nd Street. The area has been sealed off with cranes and massive searchlights illuminating the set from above.
As the filming progressed, dozens of extras were spotted in the vibrant setting, with one wearing a quintessential “I Heart NY” shirt as they repeatedly walked down the street. On Swanston Street, also referred to as Fifth Avenue for the purposes of the film, the Town Hall concourse was filled with bikes, lenses, and other filming apparatus. Notable props, including a new truck and a Bearcat, were brought in for authenticity.
The production features Gerard Butler as the lead, portraying a New York fireman attempting to rescue hostages from an iconic building, alongside his policewoman wife and team. The Town Hall will play a role in some of the movie’s key scenes.
Cameron Tampion, a local resident, was among the many Melburnians captivated by the bustling film set. While some stumbled upon the scene by chance, Tampion had anticipated the street closure and stopped by on his way home. “It’s really great for the CBD when things like this are happening,” he remarked, noting that the majority of onlookers did not seem bothered by the disruption. He expressed that knowing a film was shot in Melbourne made him more likely to watch it.
According to the government agency Vicscreen, the film is expected to create over 1,200 jobs and engage around 600 businesses. The production is projected to inject approximately $35 million into Victoria’s economy during its filming phase, which will also utilize facilities in the Docklands area.
As the film crew continues to make Melbourne their stage, the bustling streets reflect both the excitement of movie-making and the economic benefits that accompany such large-scale productions.
