As Albany approaches its bicentenary in 2026, residents are encouraged to share their unique stories that reflect the city’s rich history. The Advertiser, Albany’s newspaper of record for nearly two centuries, is inviting contributions from community members, whether they have personal anecdotes or memories associated with significant local events.
Call for Community Contributions
The initiative aims to capture a wide array of experiences that highlight Albany’s heritage. From those who witnessed the fire at the Premier Hotel to individuals who have shared memories of whaling expeditions, or even those who remember when Dog Rock was adorned with its iconic collar, every story matters. The Advertiser hopes to provide a platform for these narratives in its upcoming editions.
Starting this month, the newspaper will dedicate at least one page in its Tuesday and Thursday editions, as well as in the weekly free publication, The Extra, to showcase these personal accounts. This commitment reflects the newspaper’s dedication to documenting Albany’s history as it prepares for this significant milestone.
How to Participate
Residents interested in sharing their stories can reach out via email at [email protected], call 9892 8363, or connect through the Albany Advertiser Facebook page. The newspaper encourages all submissions, emphasizing that no story is too small to be included in this celebration of Albany’s diverse tapestry.
As Albany gears up for its 200th anniversary, this initiative not only seeks to preserve the community’s collective memories but also aims to foster a sense of unity and pride among residents. The Advertiser looks forward to the contributions that will help paint a vivid picture of Albany’s past, present, and future.
