Jade Melbourne Leads UC Capitals to Thrilling Victory Over Venom

In a gripping contest at AIS Arena on Saturday night, the UC Capitals triumphed over the Geelong Venom with a score of 77-73, thanks to a standout performance from Jade Melbourne. The 23-year-old Opals star notched a season-high of 21 points while dishing out 10 assists, propelling her team to a vital victory that provides much-needed breathing room in the WNBL standings.

The Capitals improved their record to 6-6, placing them two wins ahead of the fifth-placed Southside Melbourne Flyers, who currently sit at 4-7. This match was particularly significant as it followed a narrow victory for the Capitals over the Venom on December 7, when Nicole Munger sank a last-minute three-pointer to secure a 76-75 win. With both teams eager for a win, the latest matchup was expected to be just as tightly contested.

Intense Battle with Multiple Lead Changes

Saturday’s game did not disappoint, featuring an astonishing 25 lead changes. The teams entered the final quarter tied at 53-53, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Canberra surged ahead with an impressive 10-2 run, establishing their largest lead of the game at 10 points. Yet, the Venom, known for their resilience, fought back to close the gap to just three points.

In the crucial moments, Melbourne and Nyadiew Puoch delivered vital baskets to secure the Capitals’ victory. Sara Blicavs contributed significantly with 13 points and five rebounds, while Zitina Aokuso added 17 points, marking the Capitals’ fourth consecutive win—a milestone not achieved since February 2022.

“This was probably just a normal night that she (Melbourne) had,” said Capitals coach Paul Goriss. “Being able to bring Aokuso into the lineup, play the minutes that she’s playing, and play that two-man pick and roll with Jade is definitely advantageous for us.”

Geelong’s Struggle Continues

For the Venom, the loss was a bitter pill to swallow, marking their seventh consecutive defeat and their eighth loss by a margin of eight points or less. Jaz Shelley, who had struggled in a previous game against the Flyers, rebounded impressively, scoring a season-high 29 points. Shyla Heal also contributed with 18 points, while American import Alissa Pili, returning from an ankle injury, recorded seven points and five rebounds.

Despite the disappointing outcome, Venom coach Chris Lucas acknowledged the team’s improved performance. “Tough loss. We’re used to that,” he stated. “There was concentration in little moments, and I’m really pleased. I’m not happy with the loss, but it’s an improved performance.”

The Capitals’ ability to maintain their momentum in the final quarter ultimately secured their victory, showcasing the team’s growth and resilience as they aim to solidify their position in the WNBL standings. With the playoffs approaching, both teams will need to find consistency as they navigate the remainder of the season.
