The No. 1 ranked UConn Huskies secured an impressive achievement by finishing their regular season undefeated with a commanding 85-49 victory against St. John’s on Sunday night. This win marks the Huskies’ 11th flawless regular season in the program’s history, placing them just nine victories away from a potential repeat as national champions.
UConn head coach Geno Auriemma expressed pride in his team’s accomplishment, stating, “When you are fortunate enough to go through 31 games and win them all, there is something to be proud of.” He emphasized the significance of this achievement while acknowledging the work that lies ahead as the team prepares for the upcoming Big East tournament. Sarah Strong, a candidate for national player of the year, echoed Auriemma’s sentiments, noting the importance of celebrating their success while remaining focused on future challenges.
Historic Winning Streak and Impressive Performance
Sunday’s matchup at Madison Square Garden witnessed a crowd of 9,612, marking the venue’s first standalone women’s college basketball game. The Huskies extended their winning streak to 47 games, tying for the fifth-longest streak in NCAA Division I history. UConn holds five of the top six longest winning streaks in the division, with their last loss occurring on February 6, 2025, against Tennessee.
The Huskies showcased their dominance by establishing a strong lead with a 24-9 first quarter. They maintained a high shooting percentage of 57% throughout the game and forced St. John’s into 22 turnovers. UConn’s depth was evident as six players contributed with at least nine points each, highlighting the team’s collective strength.
Looking ahead, UConn faces increased scrutiny as they prepare for the Big East tournament, where they will meet either Georgetown or Butler in the quarterfinals. The team has consistently been recognized as the No. 1 overall seed in early bracket projections for the NCAA tournament.
Challenges Ahead and Coach’s Insights
Despite the team’s success, Auriemma remains cautious, particularly as they no longer have superstar Paige Bueckers, the 2023 No. 1 WNBA draft pick, to rely on. He commented, “I do think when the NCAA tournament begins, it certainly is not going to be as easy as we experienced it last season.” Auriemma emphasized that every tournament poses unique challenges, stating that the best teams often do not win, but rather the teams that come together at the right moment.
UConn’s current roster boasts two likely All-Americans in Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd, along with a wealth of talent available from the bench. Auriemma is confident in his team’s potential, noting their strong defensive performance throughout the season. “If we stay in that mindset, then we’ll have a chance,” he said.
Strong added that maintaining team cohesion will be essential as they navigate the postseason. She remarked, “The postseason is going to have a lot of ups and downs, so I think everyone having each other’s backs and being there for each other is going to help us.”
As the UConn Huskies head into the tournament, their flawless record and seasoned roster position them as formidable contenders for another national championship. The coming weeks will test their resilience and teamwork as they aim to solidify their legacy in women’s college basketball.
