UPDATE: Australians are bracing for a Christmas Day of extreme weather as the Bureau of Meteorology reveals a drastic mix of conditions across the country. With temperatures expected to soar up to 41C in Perth and 35C in Brisbane, many will be donning summer attire, while others will need winter clothing as Melbourne and Hobart face unseasonably cool highs of just 17C and 16C, respectively.
Meteorologists warn that if Melbourne only reaches 17C, it will mark the city’s coldest Christmas since 2006. Senior meteorologist Jonathan How states, “Quite the extremes across both ends of the country.” Residents in Melbourne can expect morning showers, with local forecasts indicating a chance of light snow flurries in elevated areas.
In contrast, Brisbane is predicted to experience “very muggy” conditions, with possible afternoon thunderstorms. Severe storms are also on the radar for areas from the Sunshine Coast to Cairns, as well as much of the Northern Territory and Western Australia‘s Kimberley region. Darwin and Cairns will see maximum temperatures in the low 30s, while parts of Western Australia’s Pilbara could reach dangerously high temperatures in the low to mid 40s.
Meanwhile, Adelaide, Sydney, and Canberra will enjoy milder conditions in the mid 20s. The stark temperature differences stem from a high-pressure system over the Great Australian Bight, a pattern not uncommon for this time of year. “It just comes down to timing,” How adds, noting that the coolest day across Victoria and Tasmania coincides with Christmas.
Looking ahead, meteorologists assure that warmer weather will return after Christmas Day. Anticipation builds for the Boxing Day Test, with dry conditions and sunshine expected at the MCG. However, immediate weather concerns loom large for eastern and northeastern New South Wales, where heatwave conditions persist, with areas like Penrith and Richmond projected to hit the low 40s.
Total fire bans have been declared for five districts in NSW, alongside severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of eastern Victoria and western NSW. Communities including Mildura, Swan Hill, and Albury-Wodonga are advised to prepare for heavy rain, destructive winds, and potential tornadoes. Critical weather alerts indicate that Broken Hill, Menindee, and Fowlers Gap are also at risk for extreme conditions, including large hailstones.
As Australia gears up for a unique Christmas, the weather will undoubtedly impact celebrations nationwide. Residents are advised to stay informed of the latest forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology as conditions continue to develop.
