Father Convicted of Murder After Fatal Wallet Dispute

URGENT UPDATE: A father has been found guilty of murder after a deadly dispute over a stolen wallet escalated tragically. Luke James Picking, 42, was convicted for the shooting of Abdurhman Jemal, 33, outside a shopping strip in Glenroy, Melbourne, on March 28, 2024. The verdict was delivered by a jury at the Victorian Supreme Court this Wednesday, rejecting Picking’s claims that he accidentally pulled the trigger.

The court heard that the incident stemmed from a personal feud. Picking’s son, Brodi Picking, 19, was acquitted of murder but found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter. Tensions flared after Brodi accused Jemal of stealing his wallet, leading to a confrontation in a local Bunnings car park. Just hours before the fatal encounter, CCTV footage captured the duo following Jemal, displaying their intent to confront him.

During the confrontation, the situation turned violent. The jury was shown footage of a heated exchange, during which Luke Picking allegedly shouted, “you want a f***ing air raid,” before firing a shotgun at Jemal, striking him in the face and neck. Tragically, Jemal succumbed to multiple pellet wounds shortly after.

Authorities revealed that after the shooting, Luke Picking contacted his friend Ian Harris, 49, seeking assistance to dispose of the weapon. Harris was later found not guilty of assisting an offender. Both Luke and Brodi Picking are currently remanded in custody as they await a pre-sentence hearing.

This shocking case highlights the devastating consequences of escalating conflicts over personal possessions. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of gun violence in community disputes and serves as a stark reminder of the need for conflict resolution.

As the community reacts to this tragic outcome, discussions around the implications of such violent confrontations are expected to continue. The Picks await their sentencing, with the legal proceedings drawing significant public attention. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
