UPDATE: Bendigo Spirit co-captains Kelsey Griffin and Marianna Tolo are set to reach a monumental milestone together as they both play their 250th WNBL game on Sunday, July 2, 2023. The historic match will take place at 12:30 PM in Traralgon against the Perth Lynx.
This landmark achievement for Griffin and Tolo is not just a personal victory; it symbolizes their dedication and teamwork over the years. Griffin’s journey includes two stints with the Spirit and a four-year period with the Canberra Capitals, while Tolo has played for the Australian Institute of Sport, the Capitals, and joined the Spirit last season.
Both legends share a remarkable bond, including the same birthday of July 2, with Griffin being two years older. They are also five-time WNBL champions, with Griffin claiming three titles with the Spirit and two with Canberra, while Tolo holds four championships with Canberra and one with the Spirit.
“To be able to do it with Tolo is what’s making it special,” Griffin stated. “I’m not one for individual accolades; that’s why I play a team sport. To share this moment with her—especially considering how different our journeys have been—is incredibly meaningful.”
Griffin, a naturalized Australian since 2015, has made a significant impact in the WNBL, ranking second in Spirit history for points and rebounds, and third for assists. At 38, she has played 177 of her WNBL games for the Spirit, trailing only behind Kelly Wilson and Gabe Richards in total games played.
“Early days, playing 250 WNBL games wasn’t on my radar at all,” Griffin reflected. “But after winning the championship last year, I knew I was close to this milestone, and it means a lot, especially as a naturalized import.”
As the Spirit prepares for this crucial match, they currently hold a 4-2 record and sit third on the WNBL ladder. However, they are looking to bounce back after suffering a 79-64 loss to Perth last Sunday.
This game not only marks a personal achievement for Griffin and Tolo but also highlights the spirit of camaraderie and collective effort within the team. The basketball community is eager to witness this historic moment as Griffin and Tolo continue to inspire fans and teammates alike.
Stay tuned for updates on this exciting milestone and what it means for the future of the Bendigo Spirit!
