UPDATE: The Perth Lynx delivered a commanding performance, defeating the Canberra Capitals 75-49 in a decisive WNBL matchup on Tuesday night in Perth. Anneli Maley, defying her recent snub from the Opals squad, showcased her dominance with a staggering 21 rebounds and 16 points, solidifying her status as a key player for the Lynx.
Maley’s standout performance comes just days after being overlooked for the Opals’ 19-player squad announced last week. Lynx coach Ryan Petrik expressed disbelief over Maley’s exclusion, emphasizing her crucial contribution to the team. After a remarkable effort of 19 points and 16 rebounds against Adelaide Lightning earlier, Maley escalated her game to new heights against the Capitals.
Entering the match, the Capitals (6-7) were on a four-game winning streak, but the absence of forward Sara Blicavs due to a knee injury was palpable. Only two Canberra players managed to reach double figures, with Kadiatou Sissoko leading the team with 20 points. In contrast, the Lynx (10-3) celebrated their fifth consecutive victory, bolstered by an exceptional performance from teammate Ally Wilson, who scored 28 points despite recovering from knee surgery and playing with a mask due to a broken nose.
Maley’s rebound tally nearly threatened the long-standing WNBL record of 27 rebounds set by Rachael Sporn in 1989, as she entered the final quarter with 20 rebounds. However, her time on the bench limited her chances to break the record. “It felt really good,” Maley told ESPN after the match. “I was just really proud of the girls and the way we came together coming out for the second half.”
The Lynx surged early, taking a 21-14 lead by the end of the first quarter, with a strong defensive presence that produced seven offensive rebounds. However, a cold shooting stretch allowed the Capitals to close the gap to just three points by halftime. Despite their struggles, Perth’s defensive tenacity held Canberra to a mere 20 points in the second half, sealing the decisive win.
As the WNBL season progresses, the Lynx’s remarkable form continues to build momentum, highlighting the resilience and skill of players like Maley and Wilson. Fans are eagerly anticipating their next matchup as the Lynx aim to extend their winning streak further.
