The racing community is in mourning following the tragic death of apprentice jockey Bronte Simpson, who was killed in a car crash near Mendooran, north of Dubbo on December 20, 2023. The accident occurred at approximately 9:15 PM when Simpson’s SUV veered off the Castlereagh Highway and collided with a tree. Despite the quick response from passing motorists, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Simpson, just 24 years old, was originally from Ballarat and had recently moved to New South Wales to pursue her jockey career. She was an apprentice under trainer Sara Ryan in Wyong before switching to the stables of Jane Clement in Tamworth. Earlier this year, she achieved her first victory at Muswellbrook on May 2 and amassed a total of 14 career wins, with her latest triumph occurring on December 12 at Warren.
In a heartfelt statement, Tony Crisafi, chief executive of the NSW Jockeys’ Association, expressed the devastating impact of Simpson’s death on the racing community. “We’ve lost a member of our family in this devastating and tragic event,” he said. “We have been left devastated by the news. On behalf of the association and our fellow jockeys, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Bronte’s family.”
Simpson had recently competed at the Dubbo Turf Club just days before her death, with five rides on the card, four of which were for trainer Clement. Her growing reputation among young female riders has made her loss particularly poignant for her peers. “Many of whom Bronte was very close with, and it has hit them the hardest,” Crisafi added. The association is committed to providing support for those affected.
Just two years prior, Simpson faced a life-altering challenge when she was severely injured after being kicked in the face by a horse while working. “I had to have surgery to have a plate inserted in my jaw,” she recalled. “But there was no way I was going to quit. I love the industry and always wanted to become a jockey.”
As tributes pour in, the racing community is reminded of the fragility of life and the dangers faced by jockeys and those in the industry. The outpouring of grief highlights how Simpson was starting to make significant waves in the racing world before her untimely passing.
As the investigation into the crash continues, the community is left to reflect on the vibrant future that was tragically cut short. Those who knew her and followed her career will remember her as a rising star with an indomitable spirit.
Developments will continue to unfold regarding memorial services and support for her family and friends. The racing world stands united in honoring the memory of Bronte Simpson, whose impact will not be forgotten.
