UPDATE: A devastating incident has claimed the life of 34-year-old farmer Jaxon Peakall, who was tragically killed while assisting in firefighting efforts against a rampant bushfire in Mindarabin on Tuesday, July 17, 2023. Peakall was patrolling the outskirts of the fire on Old Ongerup Road when a burnt tree fell on his vehicle shortly after 8 PM, causing critical injuries that led to his death at the scene.
This heartbreaking loss highlights the risks faced by community members who volunteer to combat wildfires. Peakall, who recently took over the family farm in Amelup from his retired parents, was actively involved in protecting the properties of friends and neighbors, demonstrating the spirit of solidarity in his close-knit community. Friends describe him as a “beautiful” person, a “quiet but lovely bloke” who was well-regarded and passionate about farming.
The bushfire, which ignited at 12:18 PM on Tuesday, prompted three emergency-level warnings as it spread across 5,542 hectares of land. By 3:21 PM on Wednesday, authorities reported that the blaze had been brought under control. Over 100 firefighters were mobilized to contain the fire, underscoring the urgency and scale of the response.
While no homes were lost, significant damage has been reported to farmland in the area, raising concerns for local farmers who may now face dire economic challenges. Shire of Gnowangerup president Kate O’Keeffe confirmed that the council is taking steps to support those affected. A counseling service has been engaged to assist individuals struggling with the aftermath, including firefighters, ambulance crews, and police who responded to the tragedy.
“We want to ensure that everyone impacted knows they have support,” O’Keeffe stated. “The emotional toll on all involved, especially for those first on the scene, is considerable.” She emphasized the importance of mental health support for all responders, acknowledging that they are human first, despite their training.
As cleanup efforts continue, the council is monitoring the situation closely, aware of the ongoing concerns regarding soil degradation and damage to agricultural land. The community’s resilience is being tested, but support networks are being established to help farmers recover from this calamity.
For residents in the fire-affected zones, a bushfire advice alert remains in effect, covering areas bounded by Tie Line Road, Chester Pass Road, O’Neill Road, Ongerup Creek, Hart Road, Gnowangerup-Jerramungup Road, Coromup Road, and Hinkley Road in Jackitup, Mindarabin, and Toompup.
As the community mourns the loss of Jaxon Peakall, his contributions and spirit of selflessness will not be forgotten. The impact of this tragedy will resonate deeply within the Gnowangerup area, as farmers and residents unite in the face of adversity.
