Urgent Measles Alert: Jetstar Flight from Bali to Brisbane Exposed

UPDATE: A serious health warning has just been issued after a person infectious with measles traveled from Bali to Brisbane on August 19, 2023. Health authorities are urging anyone who may have been exposed to monitor for symptoms immediately.

The Queensland government confirmed that an individual unknowingly carrying the virus arrived on Jetstar flight JQ60, landing at approximately 5:40 AM at Brisbane Airport. This location is listed as a potential exposure site along with the airport itself, where people were present between 5:40 AM and 7:10 AM.

Later that same day, the infectious individual visited Aldi in Yamanto from 5:50 PM to 6:40 PM. Customers who were at the store during this timeframe are particularly urged to keep an eye out for symptoms.

On August 23, the person then traveled to Footes Pharmacy in Boonah between 11:30 AM and 12:00 PM and later visited the Boonah Hospital emergency department from 6:20 PM to 11:20 PM.

In a statement, West Moreton Health emphasized that while these sites are now safe, early signs of measles can include fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes, followed by a distinctive rash. Public health physician Dr. Catherine Quagliotto warned, “Although serious complications are rare, measles can cause severe illness.”

The highly contagious nature of measles means symptoms can appear between one and 18 days after exposure. Authorities are advising anyone who visited the mentioned locations during the specified times to be vigilant for any signs of illness.

Vaccination is strongly recommended as the best defense against measles, benefiting both individuals and the wider community. This alert follows a previous warning related to another Jetstar flight that departed from Perth on July 22, where additional cases were reported.

Stay informed and share this urgent health alert with family and friends to ensure everyone is aware of the potential risks. The health and safety of our communities depend on timely communication and action.
