UPDATE: Western Australia (WA) is leading the nation in international tourism recovery, with new data confirming that the state is on track to fully regain pre-pandemic visitor levels by the end of 2025. According to the latest figures, WA welcomed a remarkable 991,000 international guests in the 12 months ending in September 2025, marking an impressive 17% increase year-on-year and achieving 99.5% of 2019 visitor numbers.
This surge in international tourism is attributed to the Cook Government’s dedicated efforts to revitalize the tourism and hospitality sectors, a key part of its economic diversification strategy. The data reveals that WA’s tourism industry is not only recovering but thriving, solidifying its position as a premier destination for travelers worldwide.
“I am incredibly proud to see Western Australia leading the nation in terms of international tourism recovery,” stated Reece Whitby, Minister for Tourism. “To end the year with 99.5% of international visitation recovered is a huge achievement and reflects our focus on diversifying the economy through investment in tourism.”
WA’s strategic initiatives under the Western Australia Visitor Economy Strategy 2033 aim for a complete return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of next year. The plan emphasizes investments in Aboriginal tourism, accommodation, aviation, and major events to enhance the state’s appeal.
In addition to the influx of international visitors, WA also recorded a 12% increase in interstate travel, further cementing its status as a favored destination. Key markets contributing to this resurgence include Japan, the USA, the UK, and India, with China remaining the top spender. Notably, WA welcomed 71,400 visitors from China, who collectively spent $488 million during their stay.
In an exciting development, direct flights between China and Perth will soon become available year-round through China Southern Airlines, significantly boosting travel opportunities and expected visitor numbers from this critical market.
WA is served by 23 airlines offering 20 direct flight routes into Perth, ensuring that the state remains a top-of-mind destination for international travelers. This robust connectivity underscores WA’s role as the western gateway to Australia.
As the state gears up for further tourism growth, officials are optimistic that Western Australia will continue to attract holidaymakers, thanks to its diverse range of attractions and events. “I’m confident that in 2026, we will be the destination of choice for even more travelers,” Whitby added.
