State Government Eliminates Device Costs for Primary Students

The state government of Victoria has decided to relieve families of the financial burden of providing digital devices for primary school students. Under new regulations, public primary schools will now supply the necessary tablets and laptops, a move expected to save families more than $500 per student.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to enhance student learning while managing screen time effectively. Schools will be required to ensure students have access to these devices during school hours, facilitating a more equitable digital learning environment.

Introduction of Screen Time Limits

To promote focused and purposeful use of technology, the government will implement screen time limits across all primary schools. Beginning in 2027, updated guidance will outline specific restrictions: students in years 3-6 will have a maximum of 90 minutes of digital device use per day, while those in prep to year 2 will have minimal screen time.

These measures aim to address concerns about overexposure to screens, enabling educators to foster an engaging learning atmosphere. The new guidance and support materials are set to be distributed to schools during the first term of the upcoming academic year, assisting in the integration of digital devices into lesson planning.

Support from Education Minister

Ben Carroll, the Education Minister of Victoria, emphasized the necessity of digital skills for students in the modern educational landscape. He stated, “Digital skills are essential for kids growing up in the 2020s, but we know that these devices can also be distracting.” Carroll highlighted the importance of limiting screen time in schools to ensure that students remain engaged and focused during lessons.

Victoria has previously made strides in managing technology use in schools, having banned mobile phones in educational settings in 2020. The latest initiative reinforces the state’s commitment to prioritizing students’ educational experiences while adapting to the realities of digital learning.

This phased implementation is designed to support schools as they transition to the new device provision and screen time guidelines, ensuring a smooth adjustment to these significant changes.
