Altech Batteries Unveils 15kWh UPS Battery for European Pipelines

Altech Batteries Limited has launched a new 384 V / 15 kWh sodium nickel chloride (SNC) uninterruptible power supply (UPS) battery system designed specifically for European gas and hydrogen pipeline infrastructure. This innovative product, revealed on October 8, 2025, in Perth, aims to enhance safety and reliability in one of the world’s most critical energy systems.

Revolutionizing Energy Storage for Pipeline Safety

The SNC UPS battery system addresses the unique challenges of Europe’s extensive gas pipeline network, which spans thousands of kilometres and carries potentially explosive gases under high pressure. As pipeline operators face increasing scrutiny of traditional battery technologies, Altech’s new design offers a safer, more sustainable alternative. The system is fully fireproof and explosion-proof, making it suitable for ATEX-classified environments where safety is paramount.

The new UPS system replaces older lead-acid and nickel-cadmium batteries, both of which present significant drawbacks. Lead-acid batteries are known for their limited lifespan and hydrogen emissions, while nickel-cadmium batteries are costly and hazardous to the environment. Altech’s SNC technology eliminates these issues, as it generates no hydrogen emissions and requires no external cooling or ventilation.

Technical Insights and Performance

The SNC UPS system comprises three 136 V modules connected in series, yielding a nominal voltage of 384 VDC, which aligns with standard pipeline requirements across Europe. With a capacity of 15 kWh, this battery is designed to provide long-lasting backup power for critical systems, ensuring operational continuity during grid outages or emergencies.

Key features of the battery include:
– A cycle life exceeding 5,000 cycles, providing a service life of over 15 years
– A wide operational temperature range from -20 °C to +60 °C
– A fully sealed, maintenance-free design that reduces operational costs
– Compliance with international safety standards including CE, UN38.3, and IEC 62619

The design facilitates a drop-and-play installation, allowing operators to replace aging lead-acid systems without extensive rewiring or system redesign. This compatibility is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency in pipeline infrastructure, where downtime can result in significant financial losses.

Altech’s Chief UPS Back-up Systems Engineer, Arnoud Blijleven, emphasized the importance of developing a product that meets the rigorous demands of the energy sector. He stated, “This launch represents a pivotal moment for Altech as we deliver a safe and practical energy solution into one of Europe’s most sensitive sectors.”

The partnership with AMPower, a leading producer of sodium nickel chloride batteries, further bolsters this initiative. AMPower’s established production capabilities will support the manufacturing and scalability of the new UPS system.

As Europe continues to transition towards more sustainable energy solutions, the demand for effective and safe backup power systems is set to grow. Altech’s SNC UPS battery is positioned to meet this demand, offering a high-performance, environmentally friendly alternative for the energy sector.

Altech’s Managing Director, Iggy Tan, expressed confidence in the product’s market potential, highlighting its ability to provide robust energy solutions for critical infrastructure. With initial orders already secured, the company anticipates rapid adoption across Europe.

The launch of this UPS battery not only addresses the immediate needs of European gas pipeline operators but also aligns with broader regulatory trends that increasingly discourage the use of hazardous battery chemistries. By delivering a safe, reliable, and efficient energy storage solution, Altech Batteries is set to play a significant role in enhancing the resilience of Europe’s energy infrastructure.
