A young traveler from Liverpool experienced a severe illness after swimming in a hotel pool in Seminyak, Bali, prompting a warning to others about potential health risks associated with pool water. Joshua Chimupeni, 23, had been enjoying his stay at a popular five-star resort when he inadvertently ingested pool water while swimming, leading to distressing symptoms.
Chimupeni reported that he had “no idea” the pool could be the source of his sudden illness. After taking precautions throughout his trip, such as avoiding ice and street food, he was initially puzzled by the onset of his symptoms. Approximately 16 hours after swimming, he began to feel unwell, prompting a mental review of his day to identify any possible causes.
“It was a gorgeous place. I was confused until the doctor came into my room and said it can be from swallowing pool water,” Chimupeni told Yahoo News. He described the experience of accidentally swallowing small amounts of water as he resurfaced multiple times during his swim.
Health Risks Associated with Pool Water
Chimupeni’s symptoms included severe diarrhea and vomiting, accompanied by extreme sweating and significant fluid loss. Although chlorine is commonly used in pools to kill many germs and bacteria, some pathogens can survive for extended periods in chlorinated water. The presence of fecal matter in pool water can lead to gastrointestinal illnesses when ingested. This risk is not unique to Bali; health authorities in various countries, including Australia, warn swimmers who have experienced diarrhea in the past two weeks to avoid swimming altogether, even if symptoms have subsided.
Chimupeni received treatment in his hotel room, which included an IV drip, antibiotics, and anti-nausea medications. Fortunately for him, the illness occurred towards the end of his holiday, allowing him to continue enjoying his time in Bali despite feeling weak.
“It did not ruin my holiday. I would just recommend precautions,” he stated, expressing gratitude for the helpful hotel staff who provided assistance during his recovery. “I’d like to thank the staff for their hospitality and I will be returning.”
Advice for Future Travelers
Chimupeni emphasized the importance of taking extra precautions while traveling in Bali. He advised future visitors to seek out recommended street food vendors and to practice good hygiene, including regular handwashing.
As travelers increasingly explore Bali’s attractions, this incident serves as a reminder of the potential health risks associated with swimming in hotel pools. Awareness of these risks can help ensure a safer and more enjoyable travel experience.
For those considering a trip to Bali, following health guidelines and staying informed can mitigate the likelihood of similar incidents.
