Dog Moms Launch Successful Puppy Yoga Business Nationwide

Francesca Albo and Lea Burbidge Izquierdo transformed their shared experience of corporate burnout into a thriving business with the launch of Puppy Sphere in 2021. This innovative wellness company combines yoga classes with puppy therapy, attracting a growing clientele across North America. Currently, Puppy Sphere serves approximately 16,000 customers each month at its 16 locations in 10 cities, with plans to expand by opening an additional 30 studios by the end of 2026.

The idea for Puppy Sphere emerged from Albo and Burbidge Izquierdo’s personal journeys. Both women, identifying as dog moms, realized the mental health benefits their pets provided. According to a 2022 report from the National Center for Health Statistics, 80% of adults who practice yoga do so to enhance their overall health. Recognizing an opportunity, the duo sought to create a space where individuals could unwind with puppies while enjoying the benefits of yoga.

Combining Wellness and Canine Companionship

The concept of puppy yoga was born from a desire for personal fulfillment. “We created the concept of puppy yoga selfishly at first because we wanted to spend time with puppies,” Albo stated. The founders emphasized that their initial motivation was to blend their love for yoga with their affection for animals. As the business gained traction, they uncovered scientific backing supporting the benefits of animal-assisted therapy.

Burbidge Izquierdo highlighted that interacting with puppies can trigger the release of serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin—hormones that significantly reduce stress and enhance wellbeing. Studies have shown that these interactions can alleviate anxiety, combat feelings of loneliness, and even lower blood pressure. “When we realized the impact puppy yoga had on people’s mental health,” Albo remarked, “that really drove our commitment to expanding the business.”

The unique offering of Puppy Sphere goes beyond traditional yoga classes. Initially, their sessions lasted 45 minutes, but customer feedback revealed a preference for a more relaxed atmosphere. In response, they developed a 75-minute signature experience that includes 45 minutes of yoga followed by 30 minutes dedicated to interacting with the puppies. This approach has not only attracted attention but has also fostered a community of pet lovers seeking a light-hearted introduction to wellness.

Creating a Welcoming Space for All

Puppy Sphere’s studios provide an inclusive environment for people of all ages, hosting events such as birthday parties and family gatherings. The studios welcome teenagers aged 14 and older, allowing parents to introduce their children to the benefits of puppy therapy without the long-term commitment of pet ownership.

The positive effects of yoga and animal-assisted wellness extend to younger participants, promoting enhanced social skills, improved emotional regulation, and better cognitive functioning. Albo and Burbidge Izquierdo have seen firsthand how their classes impact attendees’ mental health, reinforcing the demand for their services. “People come to our classes for many reasons,” Burbidge Izquierdo noted, “but we all want to feel better.”

The founders take pride in offering a respite from daily stressors, reminiscent of their initial meeting at the dog park. Albo emphasized the comforting presence of dogs, stating, “Pups are naturally so loving and present, and they provide such comfort.” Puppy Sphere is designed to be a sanctuary for those seeking connection and relief.

As the wellness industry continues to evolve, Puppy Sphere stands out by merging the joy of puppies with the calming practice of yoga. This innovative approach not only addresses the needs of individuals grappling with stress and burnout but also fosters a nurturing community that celebrates the bond between humans and animals.

In an era where mental health is increasingly prioritized, businesses like Puppy Sphere that blend therapeutic practices with the joy of companionship are paving the way for new wellness experiences.
