South African opener Quinton de Kock made a remarkable return to international cricket, scoring an unbeaten 123 runs to lead his team to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Pakistan in the second One Day International (ODI) held at Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad on March 15, 2024. This victory not only squared the three-match series but also showcased de Kock’s resurgence after a two-year absence from the sport.
De Kock’s century came off just 96 balls, marking his 22nd ODI century. His innings was instrumental in helping South Africa chase down Pakistan’s total of 269 runs with ease, finishing at 270 for 2 in just 40.1 overs. This decisive win highlighted the Proteas’ strong comeback, especially following their narrow defeat in the first ODI.
The match began with Pakistan winning the toss and opting to bat first. However, they faced an early setback, finding themselves at 22 for 3 within the first five overs. A resilient partnership between Saim Ayub, who scored 53, and Salman Ali Agha, who contributed 69, steadied the innings. Their fourth-wicket partnership of 92 runs gave Pakistan a fighting chance, while Mohammad Nawaz added a career-best 59 to ensure a competitive total.
Despite the challenging start, Pakistan’s efforts were overshadowed by de Kock’s commanding performance. He formed a crucial second-wicket partnership of 153 runs with Tony de Zorzi, who scored 76 runs off 63 balls. Together, they established a solid foundation that allowed South Africa to cruise towards victory with nearly 10 overs remaining.
The bowling performance from South Africa was equally impressive. Nandre Burger led the attack with figures of 4 for 46, while leg-spinner Nqaba Peter achieved career-best figures of 3 for 55. Their efforts were instrumental in restricting Pakistan to a total that, although competitive, ultimately fell short.
As the teams prepare for the final ODI, scheduled for March 17, 2024, in Faisalabad, South Africa will aim to maintain their momentum, while Pakistan will seek to regain their footing and secure the series victory. De Kock’s return has not only invigorated the squad but also reignited hopes for the Proteas as they look forward to future challenges on the international stage.
