Deepal L07 Electric Prototypes Tested in Albury Ahead of Launch

New electric prototypes of the Deepal L07 have been spotted undergoing testing in Albury, Australia, indicating that the vehicle’s launch may be imminent. The sighting of two camouflaged L07 prototypes on the roads this weekend has generated excitement among automotive enthusiasts, as Albury is a known location for validation testing along the Hume Highway, a key transport route between Sydney and Melbourne.

These prototypes appeared to be in advanced testing stages, showing signs of wear and tear. The camouflage wrapping was partially torn, revealing details about the vehicle’s features. Inside, exposed cabling suggests that the cars are equipped with data logging technology, essential for monitoring performance metrics such as battery thermal efficiency and suspension adaptability on Australian roads. A noteworthy feature was the front bumper, which included a tow hook, hinting at potential recovery tests or other rigorous evaluations during the testing process.

Introducing the Deepal L07

The Deepal L07 is a fastback-style electric sedan, designed to compete in a growing market that includes models like the Tesla Model 3 and the BYD Seal. While it has been referred to as the SL03 in some international markets, the Australian designation aligns with the L07 naming convention. The L07 is expected to share its architecture with the already launched S07 SUV, likely featuring a rear-wheel-drive configuration powered by a single electric motor capable of producing around 160 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque.

If the L07 mirrors the specifications of the S07, it may come with a battery capacity of approximately 80 kWh, which could provide a WLTP range exceeding 475 km. This efficiency is particularly promising given the L07’s more aerodynamic design compared to its SUV counterpart.

Deepal’s Background and Market Strategy

Deepal, a new name for many Australian consumers, is the specialized “new energy” division of Changan Automobile, one of China’s oldest and largest automotive manufacturers. Despite its recent entry into the Australian market, Deepal benefits from a robust industry reputation and established partnerships with technological leaders such as Huawei and CATL. In Australia, the brand is distributed by Inchcape, a notable player in the automotive sector that also manages brands like Subaru and Peugeot. This association provides consumers with confidence, as it ensures that the vehicles are backed by a well-established logistics and support network.

Deepal is not only focused on the L07 sedan but is also expanding its local lineup. The recently introduced E07 AWD Electric Multitruck, described as a versatile vehicle that combines features of a luxury SUV and a dual-cab ute, demonstrates the brand’s innovative approach to electric mobility.

As for the interior design of the L07, global previews suggest a minimalist yet technologically advanced cabin. It is anticipated to feature a prominent central infotainment screen, likely the same 15.6-inch display found in the S07. Additionally, the L07 may come equipped with an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR-HUD), a feature increasingly expected in modern electric vehicles. Although the spy shots showed unfinished details, the production model is expected to offer a premium feel with high-quality materials and a spacious glass roof.

Pricing for the L07 has not yet been officially announced. However, with the S07 SUV entering the market at a competitive starting price of A$53,900 plus on-road costs, the L07 sedan could potentially be priced lower, making it an attractive option against competitors like the BYD Seal and the entry-level Tesla Model 3.

Given the extensive testing these prototypes have undergone, it is evident that Deepal is in the final stages of validation for the L07. More information regarding the sedan’s official release date and specifications is expected to be disclosed soon. As more electric vehicles enter the Australian market, consumers will have increased options when considering a transition to electric mobility.
