UPDATE: An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder following a fatal shooting on a suburban street in Blacktown, Sydney, that left a 28-year-old victim dead. The incident, which occurred on Friday, October 27, 2023, has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the escalating violence in the area.
The shooting took place mid-morning on Carinya St, where the victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his neck, chest, and leg. According to NSW Police Superintendent Brendan Gorman, officers heard the gunfire less than 500 metres from the Blacktown police station and responded immediately.
Authorities allege that the accused, along with a second man in his mid-twenties, attempted to flee the scene in a ute. This led to a tense police pursuit lasting approximately five minutes, ending in a crash on Kildare Road, less than a kilometer away. The pair tried to escape on foot, but were apprehended after a brief chase. The older man is currently receiving treatment for minor injuries in the hospital under police guard.
The 18-year-old has been charged with murder, take and drive conveyance without consent, and police pursuit. He was denied bail and is set to appear in court tomorrow, Saturday, October 28, 2023.
This incident is the latest in a series of violent confrontations in Sydney, which has seen more than a dozen public shootings, arson attacks, and kidnappings since Christmas 2024. In response to the surge in violence, police established the 150-officer Taskforce Falcon in May, aimed at combating the growing underworld warfare in the region.
As the community grapples with this shocking event, residents are urged to remain vigilant. The police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are calling on anyone with information to come forward.
