URGENT UPDATE: Jemima Heath, a dedicated mother from Leeton, is spearheading an ambitious campaign to upgrade the playground at Mountford Park, aiming to raise between $25,000 and $30,000 for essential play equipment. As she competes to become a 2026 SunRice Ambassador, Heath’s initiative highlights a critical need for facilities catering to the town’s preschoolers.
Heath’s passion for improving her community was ignited by her experiences as a mother of two. “I never planned to run as an ambassador, but when the opportunity arose, I realized I had to act,” she stated. The lack of suitable play areas for toddlers in Leeton prompted her to launch a petition, garnering overwhelming support from local residents. “This isn’t about fixing something broken; it’s about recognizing that Leeton has many young families, and our little kids deserve a space designed just for them,” she emphasized.
The campaign has gathered momentum as Heath organizes various fundraising events, including trivia nights, raffles, and barefoot bowls. “I came up with these ideas because I work in event management, so coordinating isn’t too difficult,” Heath explained. The funds raised will be allocated as follows: 50% will go to a community-chosen cause, 40% to Leeton Rotary Central, and only 10% directly to the playground upgrades.
Despite the ambitious targets, Heath is optimistic about the community’s support. “Even small pieces of equipment are expensive,” she noted, stressing the importance of every dollar raised. “Fortunately, Leeton Rotary Central has committed to putting their share back into Mountford Park, but we still need substantial funding to make these upgrades a reality.”
Local organizations, including the Leeton and District Bowling Club, have pledged their support for Heath’s campaign. Community members can contribute by visiting mycause.com.au or by contacting Heath directly at 0457 547 973.
As the campaign gains traction, residents are urged to participate and share the initiative widely. “We often drive to Narrandera for suitable playgrounds; this shows that if the Council invests, it will create a space that families want to visit,” she added.
The urgency of this campaign cannot be overstated. With the support of the community, Heath aims not just to raise funds but to foster a renewed sense of togetherness in Leeton. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as Heath works tirelessly to create a safe and engaging play environment for the town’s youngest residents.
