Urgent: Community Piano Destroyed in Vandalism Spree in Bruns

UPDATE: A devastating vandalism spree struck Brunswick Heads last Thursday night, culminating in the destruction of the beloved community piano at the Bruns Soundshell. The piano, a symbol of local unity donated as part of a campaign by ABC and Piano Plus in June, was burned to the ground, shocking residents and officials alike.

The attack, which occurred on September 4, 2023, extended beyond the piano. Authorities report extensive damage to the nearby toilet block, a break-in at the Hotel Brunswick, and vandalism at the Ferry Reserve Holiday Park. Local organizer Laura Upsall, who helped install the piano, expressed deep sadness over the loss but remains hopeful that this incident will lead to improved street lighting and CCTV in the area.

Mayor Sarah Ndiaye of the Greens lamented the destruction, stating, “Council is very sad to learn of the vandalism of the community piano and surrounding property in Brunswick Heads. The piano brought so much joy to the community and was cared for lovingly.” She confirmed that the Australian government had pledged $1 million in funding for crime prevention initiatives in the Byron Shire back in February 2025, but the funds have not yet been allocated. Once available, these resources could enhance local safety measures, including additional CCTV installations and better lighting.

Upsall highlighted community resilience, noting, “Many generous members of our community have offered to arrange another piano, so hopefully we’ll have something beautiful in the near future.”

Officials from Reflections Holidays, which manages the local amenities, expressed disappointment over the senseless act of vandalism. “There has been extensive damage to the public amenities block at the Terrace Park/Soundshell, which is likely to cost several thousand dollars to repair,” they stated. The amenities have been temporarily closed as repairs, including the replacement of ripped-out light and wall fittings, are underway.

As the community grapples with this shocking incident, the Tweed-Richmond Police have yet to provide updates on their investigation. Local residents are left feeling vulnerable and concerned about safety in the wake of these events.

The community’s response underscores a collective determination to rebuild and restore what was lost. The emotional impact of this event resonates deeply, leaving many questioning how such violence could occur in their close-knit town.

As authorities work to address these concerns, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and supportive of one another. Local officials will continue to explore options for enhancing community safety and restoring the vibrancy that the piano once brought to Brunswick Heads.
