Bus Crash in Afghanistan Claims 79 Lives, Including 19 Children

A devastating bus crash in northwestern Afghanistan has resulted in the deaths of at least 79 individuals, including 19 children. The incident occurred on the night of March 12, 2025, as the victims were returning from Iran, according to Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesperson for the Afghan Interior Ministry. The collision, which involved a bus, a truck, and a motorbike, ignited a massive fire that claimed many lives at the scene.

The crash took place in Herat province, a region often marked by perilous driving conditions. Two additional people sustained injuries during the incident. The information was first reported by Tolo News, which cited official sources within the ministry.

Traffic accidents are frequent in Afghanistan, a situation exacerbated by poor road infrastructure and driver negligence. The country has faced increased challenges in transportation safety, particularly as the number of Afghan nationals returning from abroad has surged. In recent months, nearly 1.8 million Afghans have been forcibly returned from Iran, adding to the strain on local resources and infrastructure.

In addition to those returning from Iran, statistics reveal that 184,459 Afghans were sent back from Pakistan and over 5,000 from Turkey since the beginning of 2025. Furthermore, the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation reports that nearly 10,000 Afghan prisoners have been repatriated, primarily from Pakistan.

The Taliban government has recently criticized neighboring countries for their mass expulsion of Afghan nationals. In July, officials expressed concern over the treatment of Afghans living abroad, particularly in Iran and Pakistan, where authorities have intensified efforts to deport foreigners residing illegally.

According to the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation, approximately six million Afghan refugees continue to live outside the country, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian challenges facing Afghanistan. The tragic bus crash serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing difficulties faced by many Afghans as they navigate both local and international issues.

The repercussions of the crash will likely resonate within the community and prompt calls for improved road safety measures. As Afghanistan grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, the focus remains on supporting those affected and addressing the broader issues that contribute to such accidents.
