Youth Theatre Show “MOSAIC” Debuts September 6 in Brimbank

URGENT UPDATE: A groundbreaking theatre production, MOSAIC: The Thrive Anthology, featuring local young performers, is set to take the stage at the Bowery Theatre in Brimbank for one night only on September 6, 2023, at 7 PM.

This unique ensemble show, presented by Western Edge, highlights the creative talents of performers aged 18 to 30 from Footscray, Wyndham, and St Albans. Audiences can expect a vibrant mix of stories that range from the humorous to the poignant, reflecting the diverse perspectives of the young artists.

John Marc Desengano, co-artistic director of Western Edge, emphasized the originality of the performance, stating, “It’s a pretty special show. We have scenes about capitalism, about being immigrants, about being a cat that wants a home… It’s this cacophony of wonderful voices and the way they see the world.”

The show is inspired by the theme “thrive,” with performers collaborating over a span of 17 weeks to create their content. Each local government area is guided by a professional theatre maker who facilitates the creative process through prompts and improvisation. Desengano noted, “Through those provocations, the young people make a piece that they are inspired by and that they devised… It’s completely original content.”

In the lead-up to the performance, groups from different areas have come together for major rehearsals. Many participants are first-time performers, stepping into the spotlight with “vulnerability and excitement.” Desengano commented, “They’ve created something really, really special.”

Expect an eclectic experience with no singular narrative—MOSAIC promises a variety of genres, including comedy, drama, and even absurdism. “You can expect lots of character changes as well. It really is a complete variety show,” he added.

The event is supported by Brimbank Council’s community grants program, along with Maribyrnong City Council, Wyndham City Council, and the Hugh D.T. Williamson Foundation. Entry fees are based on donations, making this an accessible opportunity for all to experience local talent.
