Canberra Shines at 2025 Midwinter Ball with Glamorous Attendees

Politicians, journalists, and staff gathered on July 12, 2025, for the annual Midwinter Ball at Parliament House in Canberra, a festive occasion that provided a reprieve from the usual political tensions. This year’s event, hosted by the parliamentary press gallery, was rescheduled from its traditional late June date due to the federal election held in May.

The ball, inspired by the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, featured commentary from the satirical duo behind The Betoota Advocate. This year’s theme, House of Cards, drew inspiration from the political drama that played a significant role in elevating Netflix to a leading streaming service globally.

Glamour and Political Statements

Among the notable attendees was an all-women group of teal independents, including Newly elected Bradfield MP Nicolette Boele. National senator Bridget McKenzie made a statement in a sleek black tuxedo adorned with a Jack of Spades card, a clear nod to the evening’s theme.

Victorian Labor MP Josh Burns and Animal Justice MP Georgie Purcell added a splash of color to the marble floors with their matching purple heels. Greens leader Larissa Waters donned heart-shaped earrings that prominently displayed the flag of Palestine, reflecting her stance on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Waters also sported earrings emblazoned with the phrase “Always Was,” a reference to Aboriginal sovereignty.

Not to be overshadowed, Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young showcased her flair with a striking golden octopus necklace and a fashionable green bag. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese arrived with partner Jodie Haydon, who turned heads in a stunning floor-length red gown. Opposition leader Sussan Ley, dressed elegantly in white, was accompanied by a group of female Liberal MPs.

Minister of Multicultural Affairs Anne Aly embraced the spirit of the evening in an ethereal orange gown, gracefully ascending the Grand Hall stairs. Journalists Patricia Karvelas and Sarah Ferguson also participated in the festivities, exchanging their usual political discussions for lighter interactions.

The Midwinter Ball not only served as a glamorous gathering but also provided an opportunity for political figures and media representatives to connect outside the typical confines of their roles. As Canberra celebrated this vibrant event, the atmosphere of camaraderie and creativity shone through, underscoring the importance of community amid the complexities of political life.
