Khawaja Shines for Queensland as Ashes Series Approaches

In a match that is likely heading for a draw, veteran cricketer Usman Khawaja demonstrated impressive form for Queensland, raising hopes for his performance ahead of the upcoming Ashes series. On Thursday, Khawaja made a significant contribution, though teammates Matt Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne struggled, with Renshaw scoring 29 runs and Labuschagne only five.

Khawaja’s recent performance is critical for Australia as the team prepares for the first Test against England on November 21, 2023. Throughout last winter, Khawaja averaged just 15.37 in four Tests, but he has shown signs of improvement this summer, notably with scores of 69, 46, and 0 in the Shield. He looked particularly comfortable at the Gabba, where he made a significant impact.

“I’ve felt good all year,” Khawaja stated. “I felt really good in that first game at AB Fields. That last game in Adelaide felt really good. I’ve felt really good the whole way through.” Despite his positive form, Khawaja is uncertain if he will participate in Queensland’s next match against Western Australia, which could make this innings his last before the Test series.

During his innings, Khawaja showcased his skills by hitting three boundaries in one over from Ryan Hadley. His standout shot was a stylish drive down the ground, demonstrating his ability to handle pressure. He also displayed his finesse by clipping Test teammate Nathan Lyon for two boundaries through the leg side, adding to his tally. However, with a century within reach, he was dismissed when he edged a delivery from Charlie Stobo that swung away from his stumps.

Meanwhile, Renshaw laid a solid foundation for a noteworthy score but fell victim to a delivery from Jack Edwards that led to his dismissal. The Australian selectors are expected to announce an extended squad for the first Test in Perth following this Shield round, with Renshaw likely competing with Jake Weatherald for a spot in the lineup.

Labuschagne appears almost certain to be included in the squad for Perth, with questions remaining about his batting position—whether he will open or continue in his usual role at No. 3. He was dismissed on Thursday, glancing a delivery from Hatcher to a short fine leg. Hatcher also claimed the wicket of Lachlan Hearne, who managed only nine runs.

In the context of the match, Jack Clayton‘s unbeaten 81 has significantly reduced New South Wales’ chances of victory, especially after a washed-out opening day. The Blues would need to bowl Queensland out for under 280 runs on Friday, enforce the follow-on, and then dismiss them again to secure a win.

As the Ashes series draws nearer, Khawaja’s form and the performance of his teammates will be closely monitored, with selectors keen to finalize the squad for this highly anticipated contest.
