Federal Approval Secured for Massive Wind Farm Near Deniliquin

UPDATE: The federal government has just granted approval for the ambitious Pottinger Energy Park, a massive wind farm set to transform the energy landscape between Deniliquin and Hay. Developers Someva Renewables and AGL Energy unveiled plans for this groundbreaking project, which will include 247 wind turbines capable of generating up to 1,300 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy, alongside a 500 MW, 2,000 MWh battery.

This critical approval marks the final step in the planning process, following the NSW Independent Planning Commission’s endorsement in August 2025 and an 831 MW Access Right allocation by EnergyCo in April 2025. The anticipated construction timeline indicates that initial work will commence in late 2026, with the first phase focusing on building up to 140 turbines connected to the Project EnergyConnect transmission network.

Managing Director of Someva Renewables, Jamie Chivers, expressed enthusiasm over the approval, stating it will “provide a major long-term boost to the economic and social prosperity of the Riverina.” The project is expected to generate enough energy to meet the annual needs of approximately 830,000 average NSW households.

The wind farm is predicted to create around 900 construction jobs and sustain 55 ongoing operational roles once completed. Chivers emphasized the project’s commitment to delivering tangible benefits to the local communities, with a co-designed Community Benefits Program projected to inject at least $26 million into the region over the next 30 years.

AGL’s General Manager of Power Development, Travis Hughes, described the federal approval as “another important milestone for the project.” He confirmed that AGL will be advancing its development plans alongside Someva, targeting a final investment decision in 2026.

As the world increasingly shifts towards renewable resources, Pottinger Energy Park stands at the forefront, promising not just energy production but significant economic revitalization for the Riverina region. The local councils of Hay and Edward River have shown strong support, reinforcing the project’s commitment to community engagement and growth.

Stay tuned as we continue to follow this developing story and its impact on Australia’s renewable energy goals.
