UPDATE: The Wagga community is in mourning following the passing of Joan Cahill, a beloved poet and educator, who died at Wagga Base Hospital on December 26, 2025, at the age of 87. Surrounded by family, Cahill’s vibrant spirit and sharp wit left an indelible mark on countless lives.
Cahill, known for her engaging and quirky poetry, began honing her writing skills at the Booranga Writers’ Centre in the early 2000s. Her contributions included publishing her own works and supporting fellow writers. “She was always lively, intelligent, and never one to sit quietly by,” said David Gilbey, president of the Booranga Writer’s Centre, who had known Cahill for about 15 years.
Throughout her career, Cahill received numerous accolades, including the prestigious 2012 Melbourne Poets Union’s ‘Urban Realism Award’ and First Prize for the Fellowship of Australian Writers Regional’s ‘Vibrant Verse’ in 2013. Her two major poetry collections, ‘Buddha’s Left Foot’ (2016) and ‘The Whirling Dervish’ (2022), showcased her unique style and ability to connect with readers.
“Her poems were very engaging and quick to communicate with an audience,” Gilbey remarked. “She often used a mature woman’s irony to highlight the peculiarities of life.”
Cahill’s influence extended beyond poetry; she dedicated over 25 years to the Wagga Art Gallery, contributing an incredible 11,500 hours to guiding school students, tour groups, and the public through various exhibitions. “Joan brought tremendous joy and enthusiasm about our gallery to the lives of so many,” the gallery stated, expressing condolences to her family and friends.
Just days before her passing, Gilbey communicated with Cahill, who, despite being in palliative care, expressed her gratitude for their enduring friendship. “I was moved almost to tears reading her messages,” he shared. “She lived fully until the very end.”
As Wagga grieves the loss of this remarkable woman, her legacy of creativity, kindness, and inspiration will undoubtedly resonate for generations to come. Community members are encouraged to share their memories and celebrate the life of Joan Cahill, a true luminary whose words will continue to inspire and uplift.
Stay tuned for further updates as the community honors Cahill’s profound impact through upcoming memorial events and tributes.
