On December 14, 2023, a terror attack at Bondi Beach left 15 people dead and injured 40 others. In a show of solidarity, hundreds gathered at the iconic Sydney location to pay tribute to Police Officer Scott Dyson, who was critically wounded during the incident. Dyson, 25, was shot while responding to the attack, which unfolded amidst celebrations for Hanukkah, and he continues to recover in hospital.
Dyson’s parents, Heather and Roger Dyson, reported that their son is making significant progress. “He’s on the improve. They’ve got him up and walking little steps, but yeah, it’s wonderful,” Heather Dyson stated publicly for the first time as the Sydney water polo community united at Bondi Beach. Her optimism reflects the emotional support surrounding Dyson during this difficult period.
During the tribute, organised by his current club, the Drummoyne Devils, participants swam along the beach in a heartfelt demonstration of camaraderie. “Such a great turnout. Couldn’t believe it. Very overwhelming,” the Dysons expressed, thanking everyone for their support, love, and prayers. “Scott would be so overwhelmed with everything that’s going on,” they added.
Currently, Dyson is undergoing treatment for multiple bullet wounds and has been in a medically induced coma. He faces shoulder surgery in the coming weeks. His condition has inspired a police legacy appeal that has raised over 650,000 AUD to support him during his recovery.
Alongside Dyson during the attack was probationary Constable Jack Hibbert, 22, who also suffered serious injuries, including gunshot wounds to his head and shoulder. Hibbert has since lost vision in one eye but was discharged from the hospital last month and is now on the mend.
As Dyson watched the tribute from his hospital bed via live stream, the overwhelming support from the community was evident. His journey toward recovery continues, buoyed by the love and dedication of those around him. The gathering at Bondi Beach stands as a testament to the resilience of the Sydney community in the face of tragedy.
