UPDATE: Severe weather is striking far north Queensland as Tropical Cyclone Koji approaches the coast, with heavy rainfall already causing significant disruptions. The storm, classified as a category one, is expected to make landfall between Ayr and Bowen on Sunday morning, according to the latest report from the Bureau of Meteorology.
Heavy rain is currently lashing Ayr and Mackay, with damaging wind gusts reaching up to 100 km/h in the popular tourist destination of Whitsunday Islands. Overnight, rainfall accumulations of up to 200mm were recorded west of Mackay, with the heaviest downpours expected in the next two days.
Warnings have been issued for much of the northeast Queensland coast, from Townsville to Mackay, encompassing Bowen, Proserpine, and the Whitsunday Islands. Authorities are alerting residents to the risk of flash flooding and higher-than-normal tides in the region, specifically between Cardwell and Mackay.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli commended local communities for their preparedness amid the impending storm. “I do believe that people have prepared brilliantly for the rain that will come,” he stated on Sunday. “If Queenslanders continue to do that then I have every faith we will respond following the event.”
As the cyclone moves inland on Sunday morning, forecasts indicate that gales will diminish rapidly as Koji weakens and shifts westward. However, significant flooding has already been reported in the northwest, with communities in the Gulf Country facing severe challenges. The Flinders River has been heavily affected, leading to substantial livestock losses.
Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to remain vigilant and stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops. Emergency services are on high alert, prepared to respond to any incidents as the storm progresses.
This developing situation is a reminder of the challenges faced by communities in Queensland, particularly those that have previously endured severe flooding. Stay safe and updated as more information becomes available.
